Character or Reputation?

Galatians 2:6, NLT

"…their reputation as great leaders made no difference to me, for God has no favorites."

Jesus, help me pay more attention to character than to reputation or fame or popularity or prominence or recognition. There are going to be some real surprises when we get to heaven and the rewards are handed out. All praise to you! The great ones in your eyes are the great servants.

Things are going well in Germany.  Yesterday I camped quite a bit on the issue of Character, as it is so critical.

John Wooden, of NCAA basketball fame, said,

Pay more attention to your character than to your reputation for your character is what you really are whereas your reputation is merely what others think you are.

I confess that for many years I focused on competency and having a sterling reputation and I neglected and spent scant little time on character in the context of relationships.

Reputation is all about appearances, but character is the core of the leader.

In the search of a new king, God told Samuel (1 Samuel 16:7) that people look at the outward appearance, but He looks at the heart. This says it all.

In my humble opinion, competency (outward) is over-rated and character (inward) is under-rated. In the bigger scheme of things, more leaders fail and fall due to character issues than to competency issues. 

In many quarters in business, politics and (sad to say) the world of Christian leadership, we tend to wink at major character flaws as long as the leader is producing good results. Somehow, I can’t seem to find the basis for this in the Bible; because it's not there!
